You might think of summer as the season of lazy beach days, family barbecues, and travel adventures. But for this move manager and her team, it’s also one of the busiest seasons for moving! Many of our clients plan to relocate in the summer when they see a gap in their schedules because they know just how much a move involves. It is a big life transition, and it can be quite overwhelming to tackle on your own. But, with proper planning and support, settling into a new home can be a smooth – and perhaps even enjoyable – experience. Take a look at some of my best tips for a seamless move below!
Consider Investment Value
As you begin contemplating a move, the most important thing to know is that moving doesn’t start and end in a day. Investing a little time into prep and planning before the transition will save you a great deal of time and energy after you’ve settled into your new home.
There’s a lot more to consider for a seamless move than just packing and unpacking boxes. For example, where will all your furniture go in your new home? And what will you do with the paper and empty boxes after you’ve unpacked? From sorting belongings and labeling boxes to hiring reliable movers, it takes a great deal of time to coordinate an organized move.
Our team of move managers can help take away your stress by handling all the details for you. For the best result, it’s essential that everyone in your household is on board and that a budget has been agreed upon. I know that it might be tempting to skip the initial investment time-wise or financially, but ask yourself, “How much is my sanity worth?” Believe me, your peace of mind is 100% worth it!
Start Early
Have you ever heard the expression, “the early bird gets the worm?” When it comes to moving, getting a jumpstart on planning is the best way to make sure that you can settle into your new home quickly and comfortably. This includes reaching out to a move manager as early as possible. Ideally, we would love to be involved 2 to 3 months before moving day, so that we can guide you through the moving process from start to finish.
In the month leading up to your move, we will focus on decluttering, organizing, and getting to know you better. There is no such thing as a cookie cutter client for us! Every client and home is unique, so you won’t see a one-size-fits-all approach from our team. We want to know how the space will really be used and how we can make it work most efficiently for you.
In order to tailor our approach to your needs, we’ll ask you questions like:
- Are you right- or left-handed?
- What items do you use every day?
- What do your morning and nighttime routines look like?
- Do you have pets? Kids? How many?
- Do you prefer to buy items as needed or stock up on supplies (not too many please!)?
- Do you have any material preferences for your organizing supplies (wood, glass, BPA-safe plastic)?
Once we understand what you need in your new home, we’ll sort through any remaining items to help you decide whether to keep, donate, or dispose of them. Remember: decluttering not only lightens the load for the movers – it also makes unpacking easier.
Plan & Unpack Efficiently
During the month of your move, detailed planning is everything! We will help you gather estimates from moving companies, order supplies, transfer household services, and create floor plans to look at the layout and determine where each item will live in your new home.
We’ll also label lots and lots of boxes! Over the years, we have used so much blue tape and so many sticky notes that we often say we should invest in them! Labels help the movers understand where each box belongs in your new home. We will coordinate with them to ensure that these boxes are unloaded from the truck first. Then, we’ll get to work unpacking and organizing, while the movers do the heavy lifting.
Keep it Up
As we help you get settled in your new space, our goal is not just to facilitate a seamless move and make it look pretty on moving day. We will make sure that you have the systems and resources to keep your home organized for years to come.
Our relationship with clients often extends beyond a single move. Throughout our 12 years in business, we have had the pleasure of working with many clients for three or four moves and periodic maintenance sessions. There’s nothing I love more than returning to a client’s home and seeing that the systems we set up for them are still making a difference in their lives!
However, just like moving requires an initial investment, so does maintaining an organized home. Whether you need support to coordinate a seamless move or keep it up after you’ve settled in, we would be happy to help! Get in touch with us to schedule a free no-obligation consultation today.
